On June 16, 2011, the m:lab East Africa was officially launched in Nairobi at the *iHub_. m:lab East Africa is the sister organisation of the mLab Southern Africa (SA), and the first in the global family of mLabs to open it’s doors. (mLab SA will be next on the 2nd of August in Pretoria — save the date!)

We were there to share in the excitement and promise of the region’s new incubation facility for mobile tech entrepreneurs and innovators. There was a tangible feeling that this is Africa’s time, that mobile is her tech, and that with the support provided by the mLabs of the world, great things are destined to happen there.

m:lab East Africa is really a consortium of four organisations :-

• eMobilis, responsible for education, training, accredition and certification;
• World Wide Web Foundation, responsible for curriculum and content, training and education;
• The University of Nairobi School of Computing and Informatics, responsible for rigorous academic research; and the
• iHub for community interaction, development space, events and access to capital and markets.

We wish m:lab East Africa all the best of luck in its aim to help make the East Africa region a global hub for mobile innovation. As Erik Hersman, co-founder of the *iHub_ has said, “Until we own this narrative about our continent, we will forever be slaves to those that do.”
